The board game Hive was first released in 2001 but has been a mainstay in the industry since then, spawning three expansions.
In case you’ve not played it before, Hive is a two-player bug-themed game in which you attempt to enclose your opponent’s queen bee with your pieces where each type of bug has different movement rules without breaking the connection to the rest of the hive.
Hive is a very easy-to-learn game with great complexity set by the opponent’s moves. For example, will your opponent choose to use their beetle to incapacitate your queen bee fixing it in place or will they instead position their pieces in the distance and then striking one-by-one in a succession of moves?
My partner and I were late to the party but instantly took to the game. Every game we’ve played so far has been vastly different in gameplay and strategy and some where the first few turns were mirrored! Above all, this is a great game to carry around and bring out when you need a quick game of something or are at a pub with sticky tables!
